Family Blames FedEx For Pet Dog's Death After Package Tossed Into Backyard

A FedEx delivery driver is being blamed by a family in Southern California for the death of their beloved Yorkshire Terrier after the dog was crushed by a package that had been tossed over the fence.

Keiko Napier and Mitchell Galin told CBS Los Angeles that their dog, Cooper, weighed just 4 pounds was sunbathing in their backyard in Venice, California when a FedEx delivery driver threw a large package over a fence outside their home. The package reportedly landed on the Yorkshire Terrier, crushing him.

Galin told the news outlet when they went outside to pick up the package, they discovered Cooper lying in a pool of his own blood. The couple rushed their pet to a local veterinarian, who told them the tiny dog had sustained severe injuries to his lungs and liver.

Faced with this, the couple decided to have Cooper humanely euthanized.

"We've just had a horrible weekend," Napier said.

"It was painful to watch your dog in pain," Galin agreed.

In a statement provided to CBS Los Angeles, FedEx said the company would investigate the incident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the pet involved in this incident. We take this matter very seriously and are working directly with those involved to determine the circumstances behind this event. Based on the outcome of our investigation, we will take the appropriate action.”

However, that may not be enough for the couple who say they want FedEx to ban the company's drivers from throwing packages and taking shortcuts.

"To me that’s not satisfactory," Napier said. "I feel they need to say they’re going to institute a corporate-wide mandate that drivers cannot throw packages; that’s what I want to hear. I don’t want to hear we’ll look into it."

Napier added that the family often goes into the backyard to garden and a heavy package like that could have struck them and caused "very very severe damage."
