Hetfield was visibly frustrated by the mishap, forcing him to share a mic with Gaga. While leaving the state, he kicked the faulty microphone over and haphazardly threw his guitar. Drummer Lars Ulrich during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, revealed that Hetfield was "livid" after the performance.
In an interview with Associated Press, Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich said, "these kinds of things are horrible when they happen." He continued, "that's one of the risks of live television."
"My guys say that the mic cable was connected. My guys' theory was that ... one of the extras [on stage] accidentally kicked out the cable that went to the mic."
"Obviously, we apologize to the band," Ehrlich continued, describing the technical issue as "awful."
Despite the mishap, the band was positive about their duet with Gaga, with Ulrich calling her the "quintessential perfect fifth member of this band."
